ECU Remapping all you need to know!

Remapping your vehicles Engine Control Unit (ECU) is the best way to get more power out of your vehicle’s engine and improves fuel economy. It is sometimes referred to as “Chipping” or “Tuning”.

What Is involved in ECU Remapping.

Modern vehicle engines use an electronic management system that controls many aspects of the way the engine works such as how the vehicle is fuelled. When the accelerator is pressed downwards the ECU manages the mix of fuel and air that is then fed into the cylinder and ignited. 

It is true to say that Diesel and Petrol engines do work slightly differently but in principle the effect is the same as an ECU also controls the boost of the turbo if your vehicle has one fitted.

When we complete an ECU remapping we are able to change the different parameters in order give more performance or in some vehicles deliver better fuel efficiency, whatever the customer is looking for.

How Do We Remap Your Vehicle’s Engine?

There are several differing things we do, the most common is by connecting to the vehicle’s diagnostic port and refresh the software in the ECU, we can use a standard map for the vehicle in question. 

In order to do this, we do need to use specialist equipment and here at Downton Tyre we have invested in the latest technology. This enables us to often be able to complete the job in about an hour to upload a new “Map” to your vehicles ECU.

Bespoke remapping, we can use a more bespoke approach and manually customise the engine for you.
